New Painting Series Begun: Adirondack Erratics
- 21 June 2009 - A new series of abstract trompe l-oeil paintings, Adirondack Erratics, is now in process. Envisioned as a series of 10 acrylic and mica paintings that explore the character and existence of the large foreign boulders of rock called 'erratics' that were carried on glaciers during the last ice age into the Adirondack Mountains and then left behind as the ice retreated. Often solitary, but sometimes clustered, unintentional travelers, erratics have become permanent immigrants to these mountains and lakes, left without transportation back home.

First American Winner at International Trompe L'Oeil Festival in Italy
— May 2005 — For the first time, an American has won an award at the International Trompe L'Oeil Festival and painting competition in Milan, Italy. www.trompeloeilfestival.com Jan-Marie Spanard, principal artist of AlbanyMural, an Albany, New York-based group of artists who produce large scale public artworks, placed second in the May 2005 painting competition.
Sixty-seven trompe l'oeil artists from Europe, America and Mexico participated in this year’s competition. Each artist was given an identical canvas, a common theme (“Water: the deception of transparency”) and three timed sessions on May 20, 12, and 22 to create their painting from start to finish. All work was conducted as part of an annual public festival which includes musical performances, children’s art workshops, and tours of local architectural gems in the Piazza della Vittoria, of Lodi, Italy, a 12th century town just outside of Milan. Spanard’s painting, Water, depicts a photo realistic white porcelain sink, set into a marble countertop, the tap open with water running onto a book lying in the sink. http://www.trompeloeilfestival.com/CONCORSO2005/II%20premio%20Spanard.htm
The paintings were judged by a panel of five jurors including internationally recognized New York City muralist Richard Haas http://www.richardhaas.com/introfra.html who introduced the idea of visually transforming the facades of American buildings with architectural murals and went on to create works in many other countries as well. Another jurist, Angelo Lodi, is chief scenographer for La Scala Theatre Milan http://www.teatroallascala.org . Past Festival judges have included Graham Rust of England, and Yannick Geugan of France, both of whom are well-known and highly skilled in trompe l'oeil painting techniques.
